Brief History of the Order
In 1735, The Order of St. Anne was established by Duke Charles Frederick of Holstein-Gottorp to commemorate the death of his wife Anna, daughter of Peter the Great. Its Latin motto in the central plate of the star reads: "To lovers of thruth, piety and fidelity." After Charles' son Peter was proclamed heir to the Russian Empire he took the Order of St. Anne with him bestowing dozens of Russian nobles. After death of Catherine the great, Pavel I established three classes of the the Order with the highest consisting of a red cross to wear on a broad red ribbon over the left shoulder and a silver star - the only Russian star to be worn not on the left but on the right side of the chest.
